While construction on the canal is underway, Van tells the party much of what he knows about the Shadovar and the plane of shadow. They learn that the ancient Netherese city of Thultanthar still had their sights set on returning to the Dales and reconquering it. This worried The Black Hand and so the party decided to do what they could to prevent that. They were distracted however by more local concerns – the elves of Cormanthor had requested the parties help in locating some missing people. The party did not realize yet that these problems were connected. The party traveled to the area of the missing people and did some investigation. They found a temple of monks who directed them to The Vast Swamp. After an encounter with some lizard folk and some undead, they followed the trail of some merchants who had been missing. There they found a catacombs, and deep within was a portal. We entered the portal together but emerged separately, in visions of our own past.
Jerinar was there at the birth of his baby sister Jasmin – and he watched his mother die again.
Trodok saw the moment where he killed his parents and took to the road to Arabel.
Van saw the moment his mother killed his brother.
Wasp saw his mother being captured by the drow.
Cyrinth saw his sister dying of The Withering Disease.
A strange man appeared (Arathluth) and offered each of them a chance to change the past. Each one of them declined, knowing that the events of the past led to the future where they exist, and fight for each other. The consequences of changing the past are dangerous.
After the visions ended the party all found themselves back together in a dark room, with the portal they had walked through behind them, and the man – Arathluth – stood there. He explained to them what he was and that the portal they followed entered the Plane of Shadow. The offers were a test – while it was within his power to change the past, he would have refused and killed them if they had chose to. He explained to the party how his masters and the Shadovar – the remnants of the ancient empire of Netheril – were planning to invade the material plane and retake their kingdom – which now overlaps with Cormyr. He also explained to the party about the shards of the Stone of Madyroch. The shard located here had been drawing people in, turning them to shadowborn to fuel the shade’s armies. He offered them a bargain – in exchange for the right to live in their land and their help killing his master. The party agreed and Arathluth revealed the location of the remaining two shards – one in Sakoors and the other embedded in the body of a dragon in the Plane of Shadow.
The party then returned to Arabel to plan their trip to Sakoors.
